P.Eline Slagboom obtained M.Sci in Biology in 1987 and the Postdoctoral degree in biochemistry in 1993. Between 1993 and 2000 Slagboom was investigator at the Department of Vascular and Connective Tissues Research at the Gaubius Laboratory, TNO-PG, The Netherlands. She initiated a unit for genetic epidemiological studies aimed at the identification of genetic determinants of multi-factorial diseases. She was awarded an NWO program grant by the Netherlands Organization of Scientific Research in 2000 and was appointed as professor of Molecular Epidemiology (MolEpi) at the Leiden University Medical Centre (LUMC). She established a new section of Molecular Epidemiology and Genotyping Center (staff 25 fte). Focus of the research is to use omics data (genetic, transcriptomic, epigenetic, glycomic, metabolomic data) in molecular epidemiological studies to find biomarkers of ageing and age-related diseases in human cohorts and to understand the pathways underlying these complex traits. A diversity of human cohorts with unique study designs is being analysed for this purpose. Slagboom is co-founder of the Research on Aging at LUMC supported among other foundations by NGI. She initiated and is PI of the Leiden Longevity Study together with Prof. RGJ Westendorp and of a research cohort of Osteoarthritis patients together with Dr I. Meulenbelt and Professor M. Kloppenburg (GARP).
