Building the Future of Health

June 3 15:30-16:30

Building and Thinking at Healthy Scales

The fear for a Sars-like pandemic became evident with the recent Ebola outbreak. The panic is possibly a bigger threat than the outbreak itself. Architect/designer Hilary Sample studied the effects of SARS in Toronto and concluded that most urban environments are not fit to deal with major pandemics. How can we prevent urban pathologies from occurring in urban environments? Next, Andrew Rundle, epidemiologist at Columbia University NYC, will describe how urban design and built environments influence residents use of their neighbourhoods and their overall engagement in physical activity. He will also talk about ongoing efforts to translate and disseminate public health research to the architecture and planning professions.
